SHANE GODDARD PROUD AS UNDER 18S WIN AT GILLINGHAM

Looking back on the weekend's EFL Youth Alliance action

Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was proud of his side after they won 2-1 away to Gillingham in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday.

Jack Connor scored his 19th and 20th goals of the season in all competitions as the young Cobblers ended their opponents’ four-game winning league run.

Speaking after the match, Goddard said: “I’m proud of the boys’ application and effort today and throughout the week.

“We felt aggrieved that we created lots of chances and didn’t win last week, but they reacted to that.

“They trained well and that was shown in the performance, which was built on good foundations of hard work and teamwork.

“We looked like a senior side in terms of our decision-making, quality, effectiveness and game management.

“We created lots of clear-cut chances, deserved to be in the lead and showed character, resilience and robustness to get back in front immediately.

“It was nice to see that bit of bite from the boys.

“It was a good all-round performance and we thoroughly deserved to win.”

The youth team host top-of-the-table AFC Wimbledon next week in a rearranged fixture.
