SHANE GODDARD PROUD AS YOUNG UNDER 18S SIDE BATTLE TO LEYTON ORIENT DRAW

A look back at the weekend action

Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was proud of his side’s effort during their 1-1 draw away to Leyton Orient in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday.

Reece Irwin scored the young Cobblers’ equaliser five minutes before the break after they fell behind to Ebraima Davies’ early goal.

Speaking after the match, Goddard said: “We had some really good opportunities to win the game in the second half, but a draw is a positive result away from home.

“Performances are more important than results and although we’re always looking to win, our performance is our benchmark.

“We had a good early spell, but we went through a rocky period after they scored their goal.

“We had to compose ourselves and work our way back into it, but we settled down once we equalised and had a really good go at it in the second half.

“The boys can be pleased with their effort, work rate and attitude, and I’m proud of that level of performance.”

The youth team travel to Gillingham next week, and Goddard added: “Hopefully we can build on what we did today.

“It’s a long journey but that’s one of the realities of being a professional footballer.

“It’s another learning opportunity for the boys because preparation will be key.

“We’re looking for the same level of performance and to get three points.”
