NORTHAMPTON TOWN WOMEN BEATEN AS HULL CITY FIGHTBACK

A report on Sunday's action

4 December 2022

Northampton Town Women were knocked out of the FA Women’s National League Plate by a 3-2 second round defeat at home to Hull City on Sunday afternoon.

Kim Farrow and Beth Artemiou scored the Cobblers’ goals as their FAWNL Division One North opponents came from behind to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The hosts made a bright start and opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Farrow drawing a foul from Ellice Jackman in the area and stepping up to smash the resulting penalty home.

Hull pushed forward in search of an equaliser and created three promising openings in the first half, Laura Bartup driving wide from the edge of the box and Holly Mayfield pushing two low shots away from goal.

Despite the visitors’ pressure, Northampton doubled their lead before the break when Artemiou ran onto Alex Dicks’ through ball and lobbed ‘keeper Abigail Wallace.

Hull attacked from the restart and having survived an early goalmouth scramble, the Cobblers conceded a spot-kick when Vicky Barrett was penalised for a handball on the line a few minutes later.

Bartup converted from 12 yards to pull a goal back, and things went from bad to worse for the hosts when their opponents equalised on the hour.

Mayfield was unable to hold a driven free-kick, Jackman was denied from close-range and Rachael Ackroyd turned home the rebound.

Hull’s control of the second period continued, and they completed the turnaround with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining when Bartup fired into the roof of the net from long range.

Josh Oldfield and Liam Williams’ side return to FAWNL Division One Midlands action away to Long Eaton next Sunday, two months after their last league fixture.

Cobblers: Holly Mayfield, Sara Wait, Vicky Barrett, Bianca Luttman, Abbie Brewin (sub TJ Warren 80), Rachael Mumford, Fay Noble, Beth Artemiou (sub Chloe Martin 80), Kim Farrow (sub Kim Farrow 61), Alex Dicks, Mia Richards (sub Favour Omenazu 22)
