NORTHAMPTON TOWN WOMEN RECORD FIRST POINT FOLLOWING PROMOTION

A report on Wednesday night's action

31 August 2022

Northampton Town Women drew 3-3 away to Leafield Athletic in their second successive away match in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands fixture.

The Cobblers, looking for their first win of the campaign, started brightly but soon found themselves a goal down after Leafield scored from a corner after 12 minutes.

It wasn’t long before the hosts threatened the Cobblers goal again, with Leafield going close again on 19 minutes after their winger ran down the right before shooting just over.

In the 20th minute Northampton had their first real chance of the match with Favour Omenazu spinning her marker and shooting, grazing the crossbar.

Leafield added a second against the run of play, latching on to a loose pass from the Cobblers before slotting past goalkeeper Holly Mayfield on the 22nd minute

From here the Cobblers dominated the rest of the half and eventually pulled a goal back thanks to last season's top scorer, Alex Dicks after running down the right, chipping the goalkeeper from just inside the area.

Enjoying most of possession, the next opportunity of note again fell again to the Cobblers on 42 minutes, Favour Omenazu made a good chance for Alex Dicks but her effort was just over the cross bar.

From the resulting goal kick, Dicks intercepted the pass and found Omenazu, but her effort whistled wide of the post.

The Cobblers started the second half like they finished the first. Kim Farrow levelled things up, slamming home an excellent cross from Abbie Brewin just 43 seconds after the restart.

Ten minutes later the Cobblers has their next chance, Beth Artemiou’s effort from range well held by the Leafield Athletic goalkeeper.

Leafield grew back in to the game and on 72 minutes they retook the lead following an excellent cross which was tapped home.

The hosts again threatened on 78 minutes, some clever footwork fashioned a chance for the Leafield attacker but Holly Mayfield got down low to keep the ball out of the net.

The Cobblers again equalised with substitute Abbie Reboul rounding the goalkeeper and tapping home in the 84th minute.

The game finished 3-3 with Northampton Town picking up their first point in the FA Women’s National League following promotion last season.
