Eddie Panter scored a hat-trick as the Northampton Town Football and Education Programme NFYL South Premier Division squad began their season with a 6-1 win at home to Solihull Moors on Wednesday.
Kieron Mobbs, captain Josh Whaler and substitute Patrick McGrath netted the Cobblers’ other goals.
The hosts raced into an early lead, Freddie King crossing to the back post where Mobbs tapped home.
Soon after, Panter lobbed the goalkeeper and hit the crossbar before doubling Northampton’s advantage moments later when he ran onto Whaler’s through ball and finished.
Moors’ first opportunity came after 20 minutes when a long-range free kick was parried away by Tom Ladyman.
Panter was denied by the crossbar again from King’s ball in a few minutes later.
The visitors pulled one back from the spot midway through the first period, but Panter won a penalty of his own and converted from 12 yards to add his second of the match and restore the Cobblers’ two-goal lead on the half-an-hour mark.
David Sarpong headed over from a corner three minutes after the break, but Panter completed his hat-trick five minutes later, Whaler again playing in the striker who found the bottom corner.
Whaler got himself on the scoresheet after the hour, heading into the far corner from Jake Webster’s deep cross.
McGrath fired a low shot across goal and into the net to score the hosts’ sixth with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.
The substitute almost doubled his tally, but his curling effort hit the crossbar before Solihull were denied by the woodwork themselves late on.
Fran Constancio’s side travel to Plymouth Argyle next week.
