Northampton Town Under 18s lost 2-1 at home to Southend United in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday.
The defeat ended the young Cobblers’ five game unbeaten run in all competitions.
Coach Shane Goddard selected the same team for a third consecutive fixture.
His side got off to a slow start and Southend took an early lead when Mohammed Amir swept into the bottom corner from a cutback.
Miguel Ngwa cut inside and his curled shot was parried away by Jamie Grossart as the Cobblers youngsters searched for an equaliser on the half-an-hour mark.
The equaliser came on the stroke of half time. Ngwa was again denied by Grossart, but Kai O’Keeffe kept the attack alive and his cross deflected in off Southend defender Callum Burkey.
Amir had two opportunities to double his tally after the break, but he half-volleyed wide before curling past the post.
Southend retook the lead with just under a quarter-of-an-hour remaining when captain Jaden Crowhurst curled a free kick into the top corner.
The youth team were unable to respond and they fell to a narrow defeat. They make the trip to King’s Lynn Town in the FA Youth Cup first round on Wednesday evening.
