Northampton Town Under 18s drew 0-0 at home to Cambridge United in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday.
Coach Shane Goddard selected the same team that knocked Southend United out of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup a fortnight ago. Football and Education Programme goalkeeper Tom Ladyman was named on the bench.
Both sides created opportunities in an end-to-end first half, Cambridge the first when Brandon Njoku ran through on goal and scuffed his shot.
Jack Connor flicked wide from Peter Abimbola’s low ball across goal before the Cobblers captain headed over from Brad Smith-Howes’ corner midway through the first period.
Miguel Ngwa fired an effort at the front post which Cambridge goalkeeper Jonah Gill blocked with his legs as it remained goalless at the break.
Neither team were able to break the deadlock in a scrappy second half.
Connor came closest for the Cobblers on the hour mark, rising highest to head a cross against the outside of the post.
James Dadge kept the scoreline level with two saves late on. First, the Cobblers goalkeeper was well-positioned to deny Greg Sandiford’s effort at the back post.
In added time, he made an excellent close range save to prevent a Cambridge winner.
The youth team host Southend in the league next week.
