FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME SOUTH PREMIER SQUAD COME FROM BEHIND TO BEAT PORTSMOUTH

Details of Wednesday's South Premier Division action

6 October 2021

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme South Premier Division squad came from behind to win 4-1 at home to Portsmouth on Wednesday afternoon.

Alfie Doherty, Cairo Taylor, Elliot Turton and Ethan Aldridge scored the Cobblers’ goals.

The hosts started on top, Doherty having a close-range effort saved after a goalmouth scramble.

Their control of the game waned, however, and Pompey opened the scoring after 20 minutes when a corner was turned home.

Northampton were back on level terms ten minutes before the break, Doherty lifting the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net when the visitors looked to have cleared the danger.
Jake Webster came close to turning the game on its head two minutes later, but his low drive was tipped wide.

Taylor did just that after the interval, swivelling in the area and firing into the far corner.

Tom Ladyman made a great save to preserve the lead soon after, rushing off his line to smother an attacker’s attempt as he broke through on goal.

The Cobblers goalkeeper was called into action again moments later when he dived to his left to deny a fierce shot. He was saved by the post in the follow up.

A shot flashed across the face of goal as the visitors continued to push forward with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.

Despite Portsmouth’s pressure, it was the hosts who netted the all-important fourth goal late on. Eddie Panter’s whipped cross was palmed out by the goalkeeper but Turton smashed in.

Aldridge secured the three points in injury time when his effort from a corner deflected past the goalkeeper.

Fran Constancio’s side host Chelsea next week.
