FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME SOUTH PREMIER DIVISION SQUAD BEAT CHELSEA

Details of Wednesday's action

13 October 2021

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme NFYL South Premier Division squad won 2-0 at home to Chelsea FC Sparsholt on Wednesday.

Mac Coulson and Alfie Doherty scored the Cobblers’ goals.

The hosts created the first opportunity of the match, Patrick McGrath blazing wide after being found by Doherty.

Chelsea threatened on the half-an-hour mark when their number 11 was slipped in down the left and shot into the side netting on the stretch.

Doherty came close 10 minutes before the break, but his close range effort from Cairo Taylor’s low cross was blocked.

Defences had been on top for the majority of the first half, but Coulson broke the deadlock before the break. Captain Josh Whaler’s cross was parried out to the midfielder, who finished from the edge of the area.
Elliot Turton almost doubled the lead early in the second half, but his shot from long range went wide.

Substitute Pearce Jones nearly made an instant impact on the hour mark.

However, his looping volley was clawed away by the goalkeeper as it travelled towards the top corner.

The Cobblers scored a deserved second a few minutes later, Doherty finding the bottom corner from McGrath’s square ball.

Neither side created any further clear chances as Fran Constancio’s side saw out their third win in four matches. They travel to BSC Tottenham Hotspur SP next week.
