Northampton Town Under 18s lost 1-0 away to Cambridge United in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday.

It was a scrappy defeat in cold, wet conditions, and there were few chances throughout the game.

Coach Shane Goddard made four changes to the team that were knocked out of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup by Luton Town last week.

Callum Cook, Reece Irwin, Rico Duggan and Dylan Hill came into the side.

Cambridge, who were in second place at the start of play, went close after a quarter-of-an-hour, Glenn McConnell’s low ball in deflecting off Irwin and onto the crossbar.

The Cobblers’ best opportunity came on the half-an-hour mark when Duggan drove towards goal and his long range shot was tipped over by Tom Finch.

The hosts scored the winner 15 minutes from time, Brandon Njoku finding the bottom corner after appearing to control the ball with his arm.

The youth team host Charlton Athletic in the FA Youth Cup third round at Sixfields next week.
