JON BRADY EXCITED BY THE CHALLENGE AHEAD

Cobblers boss looks ahead to a busy summer

10 May 2021

Manager Jon Brady will meet with the Cobblers players on Tuesday to advise them of the retained list, and he says he can't wait to get to work on a busy and important summer ahead.

"We need to move forward now," he said after Sunday's 1-1 draw at Sunderland brought the 2020/21 season to a conclusion.

"We will sit down and meet the players one by one on Tuesday and when all the meetings have finished on Tuesday we will make an announcement and everyone will know the retained list.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us and it will be a busy summer.

"We want to be competitive and we want to create a culture where our young players get their opportunity but they have to earn it, it won't just be handed to anyone on a plate. We want a winning culture and a culture where players can develop.

"Next season we want to be aggressive out of possession, we will need to be adaptable but I want a side that has power, pace, aggression and athleticism. We want to be able to press teams hard but we also need to be able to look after the ball, to get the full backs overlapping and to get a style that excites the fans. We won't overplay, we will need to be able to play around teams, through teams and over teams. We will have patterns of play and we will be very organised.

"We have worked had on being defensively strong over the last few months because unfortunately we don't retain the ball well enough in League 1 but we want that to change so we have so much work to do.

"We need to get staffing right, we need to get recruitment right and we need to be ready to go next season.

"I want to connect our team to the community and to the fans and I want us to be brave in what we do. I am so excited by this challenge.

"The aim will be to be the best we can be. We have a lot of work to do and let's build our confidence with the work we do over the summer. "

Brady also added words of praise for Sam Hoskins, who played in an unfamiliar right back position at the Stadium of Light.

"Sam Hoskins gives the squad so much and he is so unselfish," said Brady. "We were struggling for defensive numbers on Sunday and as soon as I asked Sam if he would fill in at right back for us he said yes straight away. He always puts the team first and I thought he played really well in a position that is not natural for him."
