OFFICIAL: COLIN CALDERWOOD APPOINTED ASSISTANT MANAGER

Club appoint Blackpool assistant head coach as new assistant manager

17 June 2021

Northampton Town have appointed Colin Calderwood as the club’s new assistant manager.

The vastly experienced Calderwood arrives at the club having been Assistant Head Coach at Blackpool, where he helped the Tangerines secure promotion to the Championship. He arrived at Bloomfield Road in October 2020 and played a key role as the Tangerines rose up the table after a difficult start to the season to win promotion via the play off final at Wembley following a third place finish in League 1.

Prior to that, as a manager, Calderwood led the Cobblers to promotion in 2006 before doing likewise at Nottingham Forest. He has also been assistant manager at Newcastle United, Birmingham City, Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

All of this followed a top class playing career that saw him represent the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, as well as Scotland at international level, appearing at Euro 96 and in the 1998 World Cup.

“I am delighted that Colin is joining us,” said manager Jon Brady.

“I think he is the ideal person for the role. His experience will be perfect for us, he knows the club and he has an affinity for the club and the supporters.

“Colin is well known throughout football for his knowledge, contacts and experience and I think this is a big statement for us as a club that we have been able to bring him to the club after he did such an excellent job at Blackpool.”

Chief Executive James Whiting added: “We believe Colin is an excellent appointment for us.

“Not just for the short term but for the medium and the longer term at the club too. His knowledge and experience is second to none and this appointment adds to a really strong coaching and recruitment infrastructure we have put together at the club over the last few months.

“Colin will play an important part in taking the club forward, not just for the here and now and I think it is that challenge that really appeals to him.

“I am sure supporters will be delighted by this news. I know he is looking forward to working with Jon, Marc, Dan, Martin and Sammo and we are really pleased to be able to make this appointment.”

Calderwood himself added: "I am really pleased to be rejoining the club and I am hoping to be able to help all departments move forward, but the initial focus will clearly be on the first team.

"I have learned a lot in the years since I was last at the club and hopefully I can put all of that experience to good use.

"The situation here is similar to the situation I arrived in at Blackpool in working with a talented young manager.

"I have spoken with Jon Brady a number of times, that relationship will build quickly and I am really looking forward to working with him and the rest of the coaching staff.

"I would like to thank everyone at Blackpool. We enjoyed a fantastic eight or nine months and I wish everyone well going forward.

"I am really excited to be joining Northampton Town and I can't wait to get started."

Colin will join the club upon the completion of his notice period with Blackpool.
