Northampton Town lost to Charlton Athletic in the FA Youth Cup third round on Saturday afternoon.

The young Cobblers’ cup run came to an end against a strong Addicks outfit at Sixfields.

Coach Shane Goddard made three changes to the team that narrowly lost to Cambridge United last week, as Charlie Woods, Josh Tomlinson and Peter Abimbola came into the side.

The visitors, who are first in the U18 Professional Development League South Division, were on top from the off, creating lots of half chances early on.

The Cobblers’ only real opportunity of the first half came nine minutes in when Miguel Ngwa broke away and shot wide.

Charlton opened the scoring after a quarter-of-an-hour, Daniel Kanu scrambling home from a knock down.

The striker doubled his tally and the lead on the half-an-hour mark, turning in the area and firing in off the post.

Ngwa had a great chance to pull one back for the hosts early in the second half, but he was denied by the outrushing Ahmed Kone as he bore down on goal.

That missed opportunity was punished five minutes later when Kanu completed his hat-trick with a close range effort that sneaked in off the post.

Woods saved a Jason Adigun penalty on the hour, but the Addicks captain made amends when his side were awarded another spot kick less than a minute later.

Substitute Myles Leaburn added a fifth with just over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining, slotting into the far corner having only been on the pitch for a few minutes.

Charlton were awarded a third penalty with 10 minutes to go, but Adigun shot well over from 12 yards.

Tyreece Campbell cut inside and fired into the bottom corner to round off the scoring late on.
