FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME BEAT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

A report from Wednesday's action

15 December 2021

Keiron Mobbs scored a hat-trick as the Northampton Town Football and Education Programme NFYL South Premier Division squad won 4-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

Eddie Panter scored the Cobblers’ other goal.

Spurs were unbeaten in six in all competitions before the start of play, but Northampton put in a professional performance to win a physical contest.

The hosts made a good start. Mobbs was denied from close range and Alfie Doherty’s follow up went just wide early on.

Panter rounded the goalkeeper and had a shot cleared off the line midway through the half, and Mobbs headed over from captain Josh Whaler’s cross moments later.

Panter shrugged off a defender and cut inside but his low effort was saved on the half-an-hour mark. The striker’s rebound was blocked.

The Cobblers made a deserved breakthrough eight minutes before the break, Panter placing a penalty into the bottom right corner after Mac Coulson was fouled.

Mobbs swept home from Panter’s cut back to double the lead within three minutes of the opener.

Northampton’s control of the game continued in the second half, and they had a three-goal advantage before the hour.

Doherty won the ball and played Panter in over the top. The opening goalscorer unselfishly set up Mobbs, who checked back and calmly passed into the bottom corner for his second.

Tom Ladyman made two strong saves to preserve a Cobblers clean sheet at the halfway point of the second period, both in one-on-one situations.

Mobbs completed his hat-trick to round off the scoring with just over 10 minutes remaining, converting another square ball from Panter.

Fran Constancio’s side travel to Reading in the New Year.
