Cobblers score nine in eventful fixture with Banbury

9 August 2021

A hectic pre-season fixture saw Northampton Town Women’s Development team make it two wins from two in an eventful friendly against Banbury United LFC on Sunday afternoon.

The Cobblers won a 9-2 thriller at Banbury’s Community Stadium.

Jasmine Sawyer (pictured) who was captaining the side, scored a hat-trick, Alex Dicks bagged a brace, and goals from Chloe Martin, Poppy Gibson and Beth Armetiou, ensured their winning form in pre-season continued.

The Development side showed no mercy in the first 45 minutes, the breakthrough came after only four minutes when skipper Jasmine Sawyer, scored the rebound from Beth Armetiou’s shot.

Then six minutes later, Beth Armetiou was involved again, her assist led to Chloe Martin making it two for the Cobblers, with a brilliant finish over the goalkeeper. A third goal for Northampton followed a minute later, Chloe Martin put in a cross for Peggy Lee, who then set up a waiting Jasmine Sawyer, who hit a curling shot from outside the box finding the back of the net.

Jasmine Sawyer then completed her quick-fire hat-trick, making it 4-0 to the Cobblers with only 23 minutes played. Northampton went 5-0 up with just over 30 minutes played, courtesy of an unfortunate own goal from Banbury. The hosts were able to pull a goal back in the 38th minute from a penalty, but Northampton responded with two goals in four minutes, making it 7-1 to the Development team going in at half-time.

The second half delivered more fast-paced action, Banbury netted their second goal after 54 minutes, and a missed penalty in the 59th minute prevented Remi Martin getting her name on the score sheet for Northampton.

After a break in play due to a member of the crowd needing medical attention, Northampton Town Women’s Development side continued to press for more goals. Poppy Gibson found the back of the net in the 78th minute and then Beth Armetiou scored with just under 10 minutes left to play, adding to her two assists in the game, and rounding off her impressive performance.
