Northampton Town Women’s impressive pre-season preparation continued, as they claimed a 1-1 draw away to Cambridge United Women. Charlie Cooper found the back of the net again after earning, then scoring, the penalty.
The game started full of energy with both sides having chances early on, the wet conditions combined with the pace of the game showed though, when Charlie Cooper was pulled back by the Cambridge United defender in the ninth minute. The referee awarded a penalty, which Cooper converted into the corner.
The game continued to be fast paced with Cambridge United forcing some good saves from Northampton Town’s Jo Daniel. At the other end Cooper, Rachel St John Mosse and Leah Cudone all continued to threaten for the Cobblers.
Cambridge United equalised four minutes after the break after they pounced on a loose pass half-way up the pitch, they broke forward with energy and crossed into the box where the opposition striker finished well.
As Cambridge continued to look for a second, Northampton Town Women kept them at bay with some solid defending. The game switched with about 70 minutes on the clock with the Cobblers trying to try find a winner themselves. Leah Cudone and Alex Bartlett both came close with headers as the game approached full time. The game did however finish 1-1 which both sides will think was a fair result on reflection.
