Rachel St John Mosse and Charlie Cooper starred as Northampton Town Women recorded their third consecutive win in pre-season on Sunday, coming from behind to win 5-3 away to Leafield Athletic.
After conceding two goals within the first 20 minutes, Northampton Town Women showed resilience and determination to go on and win the match. Georgia Tear, and a brace from both Charlie Cooper and Rachel St John Mosse, ensured another quality display for the Cobblers in pre-season.
Despite conceding the two early goals, the Cobblers looked strong, and they got their reward in the 31st minute after Georgia Tear pulled a goal back for Northampton Town Women. Rachel St John Mosse played a through ball to Tear, who was able to slot the ball past the goalkeeper.
Northampton Town Women then levelled the score-line in the 58th minute, St John Mosse crossed the ball towards the back post, where a waiting Charlie Cooper was able to finish brilliantly. A fine start in a Cobblers shirt for St John Mosse who registered her second assist of the game.
In the 65th minute, Northampton Town Women took the lead for the first time in the game after St John Mosse scored, however celebrations were short lived after Leafield Athletic equalised three minutes later.
A strong Cobblers performance finally paid dividends, just as the game looked over. Charlie Cooper cut inside onto her left foot and drove the ball into the back of the net, making it 4-3 to Northampton with only three minutes left of normal time to play.
The win was confirmed in the 90th minute after St John Mosse scored her second goal of the game, rounding off an impressive display for the new signing. After a failed Leafield Athletic attack, St John Mosse and Cooper counter-attacked the Leafield defence, passing to one another, before St John Mosse pulled the trigger to score Northampton Town Women’s 5th goal.
Player of the match Charlie Cooper said after the game: “It was an amazing comeback from the team, we pulled together to secure the win.”
Elsewhere, Northampton Town Women’s Development side were victorious in their friendly match against Wyrley Juniors FC. Goals from Beth Cox, Beth Artemiou and a Chloe Dicks brace sealed a 4-0 win for Alex de Boer’s development side.
