YOUTH TEAM FILL BLANK WEEKEND WITH CHELTENHAM FRIENDLY

News of Saturday's under 18s action

3 April 2021

Northampton Town Under 18s’ friendly at home to Cheltenham Town on Saturday was abandoned.

The visitors led 1-0 when one of their players was injured with five minutes remaining. We wish him well.

Darren Byfield took control of the youth team and made two changes to the team that lost away to Luton Town.

Josh Flanagan and Liam Cross replaced Josh Tomlinson and Tom Scott in the line-up.

The Cobblers had the best chances in a goalless first half. Max Dyche headed over from a deep corner before Jack Connor’s long-range shot was held by the goalkeeper.

Cheltenham improved in the second period, and Courtney Lashley headed an effort off the line early on.

The scoring was opened on the hour mark, when the Cobblers failed to clear a free-kick, and an attacker finished from close-range.

Later, the ball fell kindly to a forward who ran through on goal, but Charlie Woods saved his shot.

As the game drew to a close, a Cheltenham player was injured in a 50-50 in the visitors’ half. After a lengthy delay, the referee made the decision to abandon the match at 1-0.

The young Cobblers return to EFL Youth Alliance Merit League action on 17th April when they host Southend United.

The Shrimpers drew 0-0 with Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday and remain top of the group.

Starting XI - Woods (GK); Bailey (C), Flanagan (sub Brown, 71), Dyche, Lashley (sub Lekuti, 68); Hill, Cross (sub Lack, HT), Abimbola (sub Scott, 81); Watkins-Robinson, Connor (sub Ngwa, 62), Curry.
