The University of Northampton is launching an eSports course in September 2021, subject to validation.
To celebrate, they have teamed up with the Cobblers to put on a FIFA football video games tournament.
Preliminary trials were held at the PTS Academy Stadium, on Wednesday.
This was to select a student team, who will go on to face Northampton Town’s eSports team on Wednesday 18 November.
Scott Bradley, the University’s Deputy Subject Leader in Sport and Exercise, said: “The event unearthed a few hidden gems – I was amazed by the focus, determination, and skill level displayed by all the competitors. Northampton Town’s PTS Stadium provided the perfect stage for the event. I am looking forward to the match up between team UoN and Team NTFC for the esports FIFA final.”
“The event was a big success,” said Charlotte Hyams, marketing & events coordinator for Northampton Town.
“We are looking forward to seeing the club's eSports team against the University's eSports team when they take on each other in November – that is a match up we are all looking forward to!
“This is an exciting time for eSports in Northampton. As a club, we are expanding rapidly in to the eSports world, while the University's new eSports degree will, I am sure, prove very popular.”
