YOUTH TEAM DRAW WITH LUTON TOWN

EFL Youth Alliance action

7 November 2020

Northampton Town Under 18s were held to a 2-2 draw away to top-of-the-table Luton Town in Group C of the EFL Youth Alliance League on Saturday.

Tommy Curry and Liam Cross scored the young Cobblers' goals on a sunny morning in Bedfordshire.

Jon Brady's side started brightly as an early Peter Abimbola effort went wide.

Curry floated in a cross for Lewis Gilbert whose tame flick was easily held by the Hatters' keeper soon after.

The hosts took the lead with their first shot of the game, when their powerful striker drove in from the left and found the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

A few minutes later, Abimbola played a great long range pass over the top of the Luton defence to put Curry through on goal. After nodding the ball past the onrushing keeper, the winger rolled it into the empty net to equalise.

The visitors took a deserved lead before the interval when Liam Cross headed into the far corner from an excellent Curry cross.

Cross almost scored a second moments later, but his powerful strike from 20 yards went over.

On the hour mark, Gilbert dispossessed a defender and squared the ball to Kieran Watkins, but his scuffed effort from six yards went wide.

The Hatters headed wide from a low cross two minutes later as they looked to punish the Cobblers for their wasted chances.

They did just that when a deep free kick was headed back into the danger zone and turned home from close range after 65 minutes.

With less than 10 minutes to go, substitute Jack Connor carried the ball forward before playing Cross in down the right, whose chip into the middle was cleared off the line.

Both sides had opportunities to win the match late on, first the Hatters who had a free kick that flashed across the face of goal.

The last action came in injury time when Cross cut in from the left and curled wide of the far post.

After playing four games in 12 days, the next competitive fixture for Jon Brady's team is in two weeks when they travel to Gillingham in the league.
