Northampton Town Under 18s manager Jon Brady was pleased with his team’s 5-1 win away to Stevenage in the EFL Youth Alliance League on Saturday.
Liam Cross scored twice whilst Max Dyche, Josh Flanagan and Jack Connor got the other goals on a wet morning in Hertfordshire.
Speaking after the game, Brady said: “The players put in a tremendous performance today.
“They believed in the game plan, were on the front foot and really stepped up.
“We’ve worked really hard in training and got a really good return.
“We were great from set pieces - Max has been excellent this season, and it was a great header from Josh.
“Liam made lots of forward runs today and Jack is really coming on from the player he was at the start of the season.
“It’s all about the development of the players and there’s been so much improvement within the group.
“It’s fantastic to see the appetite and attitude amongst them.
“We’re hoping to build on this result because we’re on a really good run at the moment.”
Gillingham’s 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient meant that the young Cobblers climbed to second in the table on goal difference.
The youth team travel to Kent next week.
