WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT SQUAD BEAT AFC RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS TO GO FOURTH IN TABLE

Details of Sunday's game

13 December 2020

Northampton Town Women's Development team came back from a losing position to clinch all three points in their Northamptonshire Women's and Girls Macron Football League match on Sunday.

In wet and blustery conditions, the Cobblers sealed a 3-1 win thanks to a performance that had both a solid defensive display and perfectly executed finishes, and the result takes them up to 4th position in the league table. Goals from Peggy Lee and a brace from Phoebe Price confirmed the win for Northampton Town.

In a tale of two halves, Northampton Town Women’s Development team found themselves 1-0 down with 17 minutes played, after AFC Rushden and Diamonds pressed the Cobblers defence.

Northampton looked for an equaliser, coming close after being awarded a free kick just outside the AFC Rushden and Diamonds area, but were unfortunate to shoot over as the Cobblers went into the break 1-0 down.

The comeback was on seven minutes into the second half, when Peggy Lee made it 1-1. Chloe Martin played a through ball to Phoebe Prince, who was able to dribble it round the keeper and square it to Lee, who placed the ball in the back of the net.

Two goals in two minutes from Phoebe Prince in the 75th and 77th minute ensured a Northampton win.

Coach Alex Deboer said after the match; “It was a dominant win and in terms of the confidence to keep pushing for a goal, get themselves ahead and win, it will be great for them.

“Defensively we were exceptional against a physical team and attacking wise we were very strong, there were a lot of strong performances.”

Northampton Town Women travel to Bugbrooke St. Michaels Ladies next week.
