Luton Town provided the opposition for Northampton Town's final home pre-season friendly just a week before their first round Carabao Cup tie against Cardiff City. On-loan Brentford defender Luka Racic started in a back three for the Cobblers while former Town striker James Collins was on the bench for the Hatters.
James Shea saved an early Sam Hoskins effort and Joseph Mills went close from distance on a unseasonably chilly late August afternoon in Northampton. Keith Curle was then forced into an early change after the unnamed trialist picked up an injury.
It was proving to be another highly competitive workout for the Cobblers and Racic made an important challenge to deny Danny Hylton a shooting opportunity inside the box before Harry Cornick fired over.
There was a change in goal for the Cobblers at half-time but it was the Luton goalkeeper Shea who was called upon to make a save from Mills after an initial appeal for a penalty.
Luton took the lead through somewhat fortuitous circumstances when Steve Arnold’s clearance rebounded off James Collins and another substitute Kazenga Lua-Lua doubled the visitors lead with a neat chip after latching onto a long through-ball.
Martin Cranie added a third from close range as Curle continued to make changes to give players more game time in this compacted pre-season. The scoreline was somewhat harsh on the Cobblers but it was another important workout for Curle’s side with the new season just a week away.
