NORTHAMPTON TOWN SIGN STRIKER HARRY SMITH FOR AN UNDISCLOSED FEE

Macclesfield Town front man becomes fourth new arrival of the summer

17 May 2019

Northampton Town have signed Macclesfield Town striker Harry Smith for an undisclosed fee.

The 6ft 5in front man has signed a 3 year contract at the PTS Academy Stadium.

Smith, who turns 24 on Saturday, started his career at Millwall and scored six goals in 12 appearances for the Lions, adding a further three goals during a loan spell at Swindon Town.

He joined Macclesfield Town in the summer of 2018 and played a key role as Sol Campbell's side successfully fought off the threat of relegation, netting nine times and attracting the interest of a number of clubs from the Championship and League 1 with his powerful performances.

"We are delighted we have been able to win the race to sign Harry as there was a lot of interest in him," said manager Keith Curle.

"He is ambitious, he is hungry with that desire to succeed and as anyone who watched him play last season will know, he is aggressive and is a real handful for defenders to deal with. He is mobile, and a big threat in the air, and someone who can finish well too.

"I think he will complement the players already here really well, as he is a type of player we haven’t had and have needed. He can be a focal point, attracts defenders and creates space for others with his movement and ability on the ball. He is a great age and we think he will only get better.

"Harry fits the blueprint of players we are looking to sign this summer perfectly. Whatever the age and experience of each signing, we need them to have a winning mentality, to have a desire to succeed and an ambition to do well and Harry certainly has that.

"I must say thank you to the Chairman and Board for their help with this signing. They are very much behind what we are trying to do and backing the changing mentality in the dressing room financially and with their support.

"We have been planning for this summer for a while, we have done our homework and we remain in talks with some of our other targets and their representatives. Hopefully they will see what we are looking to try and achieve here and want to come and be part of it as well.

"I know that the season ticket discount deadline passes on May 25th and I hope that supporters can see that intent in our work. I very much hope that as many supporters as possible will secure their season ticket before the deadline passes and come on board with us too. It is important we, both in terms of the squad and the support, are as strong as we possibly can be for next season and I think we have made an excellent start to the summer."

Season tickets for 2019/20 remain on sale with the discount period expiring on May 25th. More details here.
