Boss Keith Curle made three changes for the final home game of the season with George Cox, Dean Bowditch and on-loan West Ham United midfielder Joe Powell replacing David Buchanan, Shay Facey and Scott Pollock. Yeovil went in to the game with their EFL status on the line with one eye also on other results elsewhere.
Jake Gray fired into the side netting in an early sight at goal for the visitors while Joe Powell tried a shot from 25-yards that flew over the bar. David Cornell was out quickly to deny Tristan Abrahams and Andy Williams saw a shot seemingly turned behind by Nathan Baxter although the assistant referee signalled for a goal kick.
The referee pointed to the penalty spot in the eighteenth minute when Joe Powell collided with Glovers skipper Omar Sowunmi and Tristan Abrahams stepped up to put Yeovil in front, sending Cornell the wrong way.
Six minutes later Yeovil doubled their lead, Jake Gray with a neat finish over Cornell.
Daniel Powell saw an effort blocked inside the area as the Cobblers tried to get themselves back into the game with a shot from Williams parried by Baxter on the follow-up before the off-side flag was raised. Courtney Duffus was close to increasing the Glovers lead with a shot on the turn but the ball landed just wide of Cornell’s goal.
An own goal from Omar Sowunmi halved the Cobblers deficit at the start of the second half, Sowunmi’s diving header from an Andy Williams cross diverted the ball past his own keeper.
And it wasn’t long before the Cobblers were back on level terms, Daniel Powell with a neat finish having been played through by his namesake Joe.
The Coblers tails were up and Sam Hoskins saw a shot saved by Baxter before Shaun McWilliams came on for George Cox. Williams shot into the side netting and Baxter saved a header from Daniel Powell as the Homeside continued to stream forward.
Hoskins had a shot parried by Baxter after some good work from McWilliams while Glovers substitute Alex Fisher spurned a good chance to put his side back in front. Results elsewhere now meant Yeovil were facing relegation firmly in the face.
The Glovers were pushing everyone forward, in need of a goal to remain in the EFL, and Cornell made a terrific flying save to deny Yoann Arquin in stoppage time and Francois Zoko also saw a shot blocked at close range but it ended 2-2.
