Northampton Town welcomed King’s Lynn Town to the PTS Academy Stadium in the first round of the FA Youth Cup.

The Cobblers started brightly and were close to a goal inside the first minute but a header from Camron McWilliams, under heavy pressure, went just the wrong side of the post.

Jack Daldy released strike partner Morgan Roberts on six minutes but the effort from Roberts smacked against the post, while with the game still just eleven minutes old, an acrobatic effort from Daldy from a Joe Jarvis cross was held by the keeper.

Midway through the first half, a left wing Scott Pollock free kick caused problems for the visitors but Daldy sent his header just over the bar, while Morgan Roberts fired a low effort just wide on 31 minutes after good work from Jack Newell.

Eight minutes before half time a Daldy cross found the head of Roberts but the visiting keeper made an excellent save, but that only delayed matters for a short time as the Cobblers were ahead moments later when Jack Daldy slotted home.

Jon Brady’s side were close to a second on 42 minutes when Matthew Slinn picked out Joe Jarvis on the right and his ball in was diverted just wide by Morgan Roberts.

Daldy found the side netting in the opening exchanges of the second half, before Luke Johnson volleyed over for the visitors on 58 minutes in their first real opening of the evening.

Substitute Michael Harding drove wide of the far post having powered into the area with 20 minutes to play, while Morgan Roberts curled a 73rd minute free kick over the bar.

Roberts was on target moments later though, driving home low from the edge of the area into the corner of the net.

Michael Harding was denied by the keeper on 79 minutes but the rebound ran loose to Jack Daldy who finished emphatically to extend the lead further.

The tie was over as a contest as Scott Pollock added his name to the scoresheet with a deflected 84th minute free kick to round off the evening.

The Cobblers will now host the winners of the first round tie between Swindon Town and Moneyfields.
