On a cold windy day at Cogenhoe United, the Northampton Town Ladies took on Corby Town Ladies in the Northamptonshire Fa's County Cup Final.
The Cobblers started well, creating a number of opportunities for themselves whilst defending well to deny Corby Town any clear cut chances.
Both Emma Dunmore and Leah Stacey had chances to put the Cobblers ahead but saves from the Corby Town keeper kept them at bay.
Great play by Georgia Tear released Leah Stacey down the left, and her cross was volleyed into the net at the back post by Georgie Powell to give the Cobblers the lead after 33 minutes. It wasn’t long before Cobblers were 2-0 up as four minutes later a Leah Stacey corner was met by a header from Fran Speck.
The Cobblers kept on pressing and just a couple of minutes later another cross from Leah Stacey was met by Georgie Powell as she out jumped her defender to put Northampton Town 3-0 up. Leah Stacey was then on the scoresheet herself after great interplay between herself and Emma Dunmore gave her the opportunity to bag herself a goal, which she did to put the Cobblers 4-0 before half time.
In the second half the Cobblers knew Corby Town would come out wanting to press with the wind in their favour, which they did putting Cobblers under a bit of pressure, but managed the Northampton Town defence managed to limit Corby Town to only one only real opportunity forcing Jo Daniel to make a comfortable save in the 49th minute.
The Cobblers began to exert more pressure as the game went on with Emma Dunmore firing one shot straight at the keeper, before Leah Stacey’s shot just went over the bar.
The closest the Cobblers came to making it 5 was in the last minute of the game when good ball through from Emma Dunmore to Naomi Dauncey saw her chip over the keeper cleared off the line.
A good performance by Northampton Town who ran out comfortable 4-0 winners to win the Northamptonshire FA Women’s County Cup. The focus now turns to the remaining three league games before the League Cup final on Sunday 20th May.
