DEAN AUSTIN ON LOOKING TO EVOLVE THE SQUAD

Cobblers boss not looking at wholesale changes this summer

18 May 2018

Dean Austin says that it will be a summer of evolving the Cobblers squad rather than making wholesale changes.

On Thursday, the Cobblers boss awarded professional contracts to Sean Whaler and Morgan Roberts and said he is also looking to make some senior additions, but not the wholesale changes that were made last summer and in January.

“We have got some very good players here and I don’t think we need to make loads and loads of changes," he said.

“The amount of changes that have been made over the last two transfer windows have probably been too many and that probably hasn’t allowed the team to be able to gel and move forward.

“You need some continuity and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the core group we had at the end of the season started to put some results together.

“Ideally for me I would like 20 outfield players, obviously we have got a few more than that at the moment so we will just have to see how that shapes up during pre-season."

He also said he would consider using a small number of loan players, but would prefer permanent signings.

“I’m not totally averse to bringing in loan players but you sometimes need a bit of luck in terms of how they bed in and integrate with the group," he admitted.

“I wouldn’t want more than two or three but I’d never say never and I’d always look at a player who I felt could come in and improve us."
