Cobblers boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was disappointed as he reflected on Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Fleetwood.
“At the moment it seems like one step forward and two steps back and I feel sorry for the supporters who came because they deserve a lot more,” he said.
“We created chances and I think we actually created the best chances of the game but we needed to score.
“When you have the upper hand you need to score and we don’t punish teams when we are on top.
“Both goals were disappointing, the first was from our throw in and the second from a corner and we work very hard on those situations.
“I wanted to go with the same side from Tuesday to reward the players for their performance against Shrewsbury but in hindsight I think I should have made more changes.
“We are in a difficult situation but there are still lots of points to play for.
“There are seven matches left and we need to try and find some wins ASAP.”
