Manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been speaking about his ongoing work to strengthen the squad in January, and that he has had to make additions to deal with the quality and changing nature of League 1.

So far five players have arrived in the January transfer window with four departing, and the Cobblers boss said that he is making changes to try and improve the squad in what is a very difficult Sky Bet League 1.

“It’s a tough league, the quality is improving and the football is getting better and evolving so we need to make sure that we keep up," said the Cobblers boss.

“Football is changing and you need pace, you need speed and you need mobility. We have tried to bring in young more mobile players but also players who have league experience and are up to speed with League 1 and can hit the ground running.

“We needed to make the squad younger but also add more quality and I think we have done that and we are continuing to try and do that."

The Cobblers boss also confirmed to the media that David Buchanan triggered an appearance related clause in his contract in the last few weeks, and the left back is now contracted to the club until June 2019.
