NORTHAMPTON TOWN SIGN DEFENDER GEORGE SMITH FOR UNDISCLOSED FEE

Defender signs on at Sixfields

17 May 2017

Northampton Town have signed left back George Smith from Gateshead for an undisclosed fee.

20 year old Smith began his career at Barnsley having emerged through their Academy and made 86 appearances for their first team, the vast majority coming in League 1, helping the Tykes win promotion to the Championship. After a loan spell at Crawley Town he moved to Gateshead last season, playing 38 times for the north east club.

"For a young player he has a good deal of experience under his belt already," said manager Justin Edinburgh.

"He has a lot of ability, he is a talented boy and he has a fantastic attitude.

"David Buchanan did really well for us last season, but as we have spoken about before, we didn't always have competition for places, players challenging each other and the necessary depth in the squad, and George's signing helps with that.

"He has performed well in League 1 before, we think he is a very good player with a bright future ahead of him. He is someone who will only improve further and we are delighted he will be joining us."

Smith has signed a 2 year contract at Sixfields.
