PAUL ANDERSON ON TARGET AS RESERVES BEAT POSH

21 March 2017

Behind closed doors work out on Tuesday

Northampton Town 3 Peterborough United 0

A Northampton Town reserve side took on their Peterborough United counterparts in a behind closed doors friendly at Fernie Fields on Tuesday. David Cornell, Brendan Moloney, Neal Eardley, Rod McDonald, Paul Anderson, Raheem Hanley, Hiram Boateng, Keshi Anderson, Harry Beautyman and Emmanuel Sonupe were among the players to feature.

The visitors were the first to threaten, a low 5th minute shot striking the post with David Cornell relieved to see the ball bounce to safety.

The Cobblers had the lead four minutes later, Paul Anderson with a neat and composed finish to open the scoring. That lead was quickly doubled three minutes later, Emmanuel Sonupe with an emphatic finish at the far post from a right wing cross.

Keshi Anderson curled a shot wide from distance as the first half reached the midway point, while Hiram Boateng sent a drive from distance off target as the Cobblers continued to dominate.

The Cobblers continued to press forward and after seeing a well struck shot bravely blocked, Keshi Anderson was then wide of the near post as he met a Sonupe cross.

Northampton Town had been threatening to extend the lead, and they did so on 36 minutes, a Hiram Boateng free kick being headed home at the far post to ensure the Cobblers took a three goal lead into the break.

Boateng tested the Posh keeper in the early moments of the second half, but his header from a Paul Anderson corner was well held.

Harry Beautyman curled a 62nd minute free kick over the wall and just wide before the Cobblers began to make changes, the Andersons, Keshi and Paul, the first to make way.

Academy striker Lewis Irwin was one of the players to come on, and he headed a Boateng corner wide as the game entered the final twenty minutes.

Brendan Moloney had successfully completed 77 minutes before being withdrawn as the Cobblers saw the game out to record a 3-0 victory.
