SUMMER WORK UNDER WAY ON SIXFIELDS PITCH

Playing surface being prepared for 2017/18

1 June 2017

The Sixfields pitch is now undergoing its summer renovation work.

After another season of producing impressive playing surfaces at Sixfields, and this season their work included the training pitches at Moulton College, Paul Knowles and his Greenbay Grounds team are now turning their attention to preparing another top quality pitch for next season.

May is always a busy month at Sixfields, with the pitch staging a whole host of community matches and events, local junior cup finals, charity games and more before it is dug up for the summer. Those events have now been completed, and the work to prepare the 2017/18 surface is underway in earnest.

"We were very pleased with how the pitch played this season, we got games on that we might not have done a few years ago,” Paul said in an interview playing on iFollow.

"There is a lot of work to do on the pitch this summer. We are stripping the top inch off the surface because over the period of a few years annual meadowgrass gradually weakens and we need to replace it this summer. The pitch will then be sanded and reseeded and ready in time for the pre-season games.”

The players return to training in late June, and that means work on the training pitches at Moulton is ahead of the work taking place on the main Sixfields pitch and Knowles is happy with their progress.

He said, "We moved on to the Moulton pitches at the end of April, after the last training session was completed so we have had a month or so with them. They have already had their first cut and they are on course."
