The Northampton Town under 18's beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 at Moulton College on Tuesday afternoon thanks to goals from Jay Williams and Matthew Slinn.
The Cobblers enjoyed plenty of early possession although it was the visitors who had the opening chance of the game, but the AFC Wimbledon forward lashed a volley wide from 25 yards.
Northampton then fashioned their first opportunity minutes later when Lewis Irwin was fouled midway inside the Wimbledon half, but Morgan Roberts' free-kick was eventually cleared away from danger. Irwin was then denied by the goalkeeper after working space for a left-footed shot from the edge of the box.
Irwin caused problems with a run in behind the defence and latched on to a through ball, but was again denied by a good save and the resulting corner was cleared.
The breakthrough came on 30 minutes when Roberts crossed in from the right, Irwin won the back-post header which set up Jay Williams to head strongly past the 'keeper.
Wimbledon managed to break forward towards the end of the first-half and their forward looked set to be through on goal, but a great recovery from Pru Anaele denied the striker a shot and the ball was slid behind for a corner.
Then on the stroke of half-time the visitors equalised from the penalty spot after a collision in the box, with the forward sending the ball in to the bottom right corner.
The Cobblers started the second half on the front foot with Anaele coming close with a header but the ball drifted just wide of the post.
Wimbledon put a good move together on 60 minutes, the ball was well worked to the left side and a cross came in to the box but the on-rushing midfielder headed the ball over the crossbar.
The visitors had the ball in the net moments after but the linesman's flag was up early after the Wimbeldon striker had latched on to a ball in to the box.
Cobblers goalkeeper Adam North was forced into action on 75 minutes and pulled off a fantastic save from close range after the Wimbledon forward dribbled his way into the box but was denied by the diving North who pushed the ball to safety.
Jon Brady's side scored the winner on 84 minutes when Matthew Slinn found the net from 25 yards. He did fantastically well to react to a loose ball and looped his shot over 2 defenders on the line with the 'keeper stranded to seal the victory.
