Harry Beautyman came into the Cobblers side for the midweek trip to Swindon, replacing Jak McCourt who picked up a knock in the 4-0 win over Southend. The Swindon side included two former Cobblers loanees, right-back Darnell Furlong and striker Luke Norris.
Seven minutes in and the Cobblers took the lead at the County Ground, Harry Beautyman finishing from close range after a terrific run and turn of pace from winger Paul Anderson to beat two defenders and put the low cross in for Beautyman to snaffle up.
Nathan Thompson went close for Swindon as the home side looked to respond to falling behind while Adam Smith made a good save one-on-one to deny Jonathan Obika.
The Cobblers keeper was again in action on the half hour, making a terrific double save before in the same passage of play some last-ditch defending from first Gabriel Zakuani and then Zander Diamond denied Swindon an equaliser.
Anderson couldn’t quite feed in Sam Hoskins as the Cobblers looked to double their lead on the counter-attack while Obika blasted a shot over the bar in first half stoppage time, Smith doing well to narrow the angle.
Swindon equalised midway through the second half, substitute Sean Murray firing a shot into the bottom corner. The goal came just minutes after Matt Taylor’s deflected effort went agonisingly wide.
Darnell Furlong curled a shot just wide with the home side in the ascendancy before Kenji Gorre and JJ Hooper came on for Paul Anderson and Harry Beautyman.
The Cobblers re-took the lead on 76 minutes, John-Joe O’Toole with a bullet header from a perfectly delivered Matt Taylor corner.
Kenji Gorre then made it 3-1 following a quick counter-attack started by O’Toole, Alex Revell dummying a JJ Hooper cross to allow Gorre to convert from close range.
Smith comfortably saved a Murray free-kick as the game moved into stoppage time and the Cobblers went on to make it back-to-back wins, continuing their impressive start to the season back in League 1.
