Manager Rob Page once again named an unchanged side for the Cobblers trip to in-form Chesterfield.

Alex Revell, who appeared to have been pushed in the back, had an early penalty appeal turned down by referee Robert Jones before the home side took the lead a little against the run of play, Conor Wilkinson making a late run into the area to avoid a pending offside flag before finishing via the post.

The Cobblers reacted well to falling behind for the first time in the league this season but could have found themselves 2-0 down but for Zander Diamond’s intervention when Gboly Ariyibi’s deflected cross looked bound for goal.

An acrobatic tip over from home keeper Ryan Fulton denied Matt Taylor as the midfielder let fly from distance while just before the break Chesterfield survived a goalmouth scramble.

Sam Hoskins came on for the second half in place of Kenji Gorre.

Chesterfield doubled their lead on 49 minutes, Conor Wilkinson’s shot taking a huge deflection to beat Adam Smith.

Revell headed just wide before Marc Richards came on to partner him up front, Harry Beautyman making way.

Paul Anderson halved the Cobblers deficit just after the hour mark, volleying home at the far post after getting on the end of Taylor’s cross from the right.

The Cobblers were pushing forward but got caught on the break as Chesterfield restored their two-goal lead on 70 minutes, Dion Donohue with an angled drive into the bottom corner from 25-yards via a touch from Kristian Dennis.

John-Joe O’Toole came on for Jak McCourt in the Cobblers final change of the afternoon but their incredible record-breaking unbeaten run in the league, stretching back to December 19 2015 and encompassing 31 games, was to finally come to an end.
