Harry Beautyman came back into the Cobblers side, replacing the suspended Matt Taylor, as the Cobblers hosted Millwall on Sixfields' 22nd birthday. Gabriel Zakuani, back from international duty, was named on the bench while the Lions included three ex-Cobblers in their starting line-up, goalkeeper Jordan Archer, defender Byron Webster and striker Steve Morison.
Jak McCourt fired an early shot just over the bar while Steve Morison went close to opening the scoring with a strike from 40-yards that landed on the roof of Adam Smith’s net.
Millwall took the lead on 32 minutes, Lee Gregory with a cool finish beyond Smith following a swift counter-attack.
JJ Hooper fired over as the Cobblers looked to respond but it was the Lions who led at the break.
McCourt rattled the cross bar from 30-yards with Archer getting a vital touch but the midfielder’s afternoon was brought to a premature end when he was shown a second yellow card by referee Ben Toner for a foul on the halfway line.
Archer saved a Hooper header as the ten men looked to rally as they had done against the league leaders seven days earlier.
Calum Butcher doubled Millwall’s lead just after the hour mark despite appeals from Brendan Moloney that he had been fouled in the build-up.
Paul Anderson went close with a deflected effort and Alex Revell headed over as the home side refused to lie down.
The game was far from over and Marc Richards, on as a substitute, halved the Cobblers deficit with a goal ten minutes from time, heading in a Sam Hoskins cross.
Byron Webster spurned a good chance to restore the Lions two goal cushion as Kenji Gorre came on for the closing stages.
The Cobblers were pushing forward but in their efforts to score an equaliser they were caught at the back and Steve Morison made it 3-1 with a lobbed effort over Smith, sealing the Lions victory.
