Northampton Borough Council are hosting a victory parade for Northampton Town Football Club through the streets of Northampton on Sunday
After a season that has seen the club crowned Champions of Sky Bet League 2, win promotion to League 1 and break numerous club records, Northampton Borough Council are hosting a victory parade for Northampton Town Football Club through the streets of Northampton on Sunday.
The parade will set off from Sixfields at 4pm, head down the Weedon Road, past the railway station, up into Marefair and across Horsemarket and into Gold Street and Mercer's Row performing a lap of All Saints before moving up the Drapery. The buses will perform two laps of the Market Square before pausing outside Starbucks for speeches before moving on past All Saints again and into George Row and then St Giles Square before heading into the Guildhall for a civic reception in honour of the club's achievements this season.
Thousands of supporters are expected to line the route, with road closures in place that afternoon to allow the parade to take place. These closures will include no parking all day in Mercer’s Row, George Row and Wood Hill; there will be no vehicular access to St Giles Square between 3.30pm and 6.30pm and Bridge Street will be closed to all vehicles except buses from 3.30pm-6.30pm.
"This should be a fantastic finale to a wonderful season and we are very grateful to Northampton Borough Council for organising this event for us," said Chairman Kelvin Thomas.
"The supporters have been with the club every step of the way this season and we know they will turn out in big numbers to share in the success and glory that everyone can enjoy after being crowned Champions.
"The town has really rallied behind the club and this parade is a chance for the town to come together and enjoy what this club has achieved.
"We have agreed with the Borough Council that there will be two buses, one for the players, and also one for the staff who have played a huge part in what has been a real united effort this season.
"This should be a fantastic afternoon, and we are looking forward to seeing Northampton come together for one big party."
Councillor Mary Markham, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “Northampton is a fantastic sporting town full of outstanding achievements and it is great news for all of the many dedicated fans, players and staff that Northampton Town Football Club has secured promotion and their hard work this season has paid off. The bus parade through the town will give all the fans and well-wishers a chance to congratulate and celebrate with the team and we expect a terrific turn out. We wish the Cobblers continued success on the pitch and look forward to watching them progress in League 1.”
