Alex Revell and a fit again Jak McCourt both came back into the Cobblers side for the visit of Peterborough United, the game coming just a month after the two sides met at the ABAX Stadium. A thigh injury ruled out JJ Hooper while Gabriel Zakuani, back from international duty, was named on the bench.

On a cold but dry November afternoon there was a cacophony of noise inside a near sold out Sixfields as the atmosphere was ramped up prior to kick-off.

After a slow start to the game Adam Smith was called into action on 8 minutes, the Cobblers keeper saving a low free-kick from Leonardo Da Silva Lopes.

Penalty appeals from the Cobblers were waved away by referee Mr Bond when Jak McCourt went down in the area while at the other end Tom Nichols went on a run before shooting just wide.

Rob Page was forced into making a change midway through the first half, Zander Diamond picking up an injury when his header was saved by Luke McGee.

A double save from McGee denied first Brendan Moloney and then Alex Revell on the follow-up as the Cobblers really started to assert themselves on proceedings.

Peterborough still looked a threat going forward and Gabriel Zakuani, having come on for Diamond, made an important tackle to deny Nichols a chance through on goal while Michael Bostwick headed wide.

Moloney went close with a shot from distance and Marcus Maddison had a shot blocked as the game remained very much in the balance with an hour played.

Paul Taylor and Lee Angol came on in a double change for Peterborough while Harry Beautyman came on with a shade over ten minutes to play, replacing Jak McCourt.

McGee did well to keep out a Matt Taylor free-kick on 83 minutes, Taylor’s set-piece effort heading for the top corner before McGee managed to get across and tip the ball over the bar.

The crossbar denied Sam Hoskins as the game approached stoppage time, of which just two minutes had been signalled by the fourth official.

The game looked set to end all-square but Chris Forrester scored for Peterborough deep in injury time to snatch the three points.
