Lewin Nyatanga, Aaron Phillips and Kenji Gorre all came into the Cobblers side as boss Rob Page made three changes for the visit of Bolton Wanderers. Brendan Moloney (knee) was ruled out prior to kick-off while Rod McDonald and John-Joe O’Toole dropped to the bench.
David Cornell saved a Sammy Ameobi shot on 9 minutes before Alex Revell went close to opening the scoring when his shot rattled the post.
Jay Spearing saw a shot blocked at close range as in-form Bolton continued to look bright going forward but the Cobblers were more than holding their own and Ben Alnwick was forced into a save from Sam Hoskins.
Zach Clough put Bolton in front on 25 minutes, finishing low beyond Cornell after a one-two with Ameobi.
With less than ten minutes gone in the second half John-Joe O’Toole and Marc Richards came on in a double change for the Cobblers, replacing Jak McCourt and Kenji Gorre.
The linesman’s flag and an off-side decision denied the Cobblers what would have been a deserved equaliser on 65 minutes, O’Toole appearing to get the final touch following a goal-mouth scramble.
Alnwick saved a shot from Hoskins as the Cobblers continued to press before O’Toole picked up his 10th yellow card of the campaign, incurring a two-match ban for the midfielder. Alfie Potter then came on for Paul Anderson in the Cobblers third and final change.
Matt Taylor’s deflected effort forced another save from Alnwick on 88 minutes, the Cobblers still pushing hard for an equaliser as the game approached injury time.
Taylor tested Alnwick again in stoppage time as Bolton held on to claim the three points.
