After a long trip to Plymouth in midweek, Cobblers boss Chris Wilder made three changes for the game at Dagenham. Loanee Lee Martin, signed from Millwall on Friday, Nicky Adams and Sam Hoskins all came into the side with Marc Richards and Ricky Holmes starting the afternoon on the bench. Lawson D’Ath (groin) was unavailable for selection.

Dagenham started strongly with Brendan Moloney forced to make a goal line clearance to prevent Joss Labadie from opening the scoring. Josh Passley twice tested Adam Smith in the Cobblers goal while for Northampton Town Lee Martin was unable to follow in on the rebound after Sam Hoskins drew a save from Mark Cousins.

The heel of Justin Hoyte came to Dagenham’s rescue when Zander Diamond’s downward header looked destined for the bottom corner before Christian Doidge spurned a good chance for the Daggers at the end of the first half, lobbing his shot over the bar when through one-on-one with Smith.

Marc Richards came on for Sam Hoskins at half-time and it was the Cobblers who went close to breaking the deadlock on 50 minutes, James Collins flashing a shot just wide.

Under pressure from Rod McDonald, Ashley Chambers saw a shot saved by Smith but it was Dagenham who took the lead, Christian Doidge sliding the ball home from close range.

Ricky Holmes replaced debutant Lee Martin as the Cobblers looked to respond and it wasn’t long before they were back on level terms, John-Joe O’Toole converting a Nicky Adams corner.

With Chris Wilder’s side now in the ascendancy, Cousins saved a deflected effort from Adams.

The Cobblers took the lead on 79 minutes, Ricky Holmes with a blockbuster of a strike into the top corner.

For the second successive game six minutes of injury time was added but Holmes goal, worthy of winning any game, proved to be the match winner as the Cobblers left Victoria Road victorious.
