Having joined on loan from Millwall, two years on from a previous loan spell at Sixfields, John Marquis went straight into the Cobblers side for the midweek trip to York. John-Joe O’Toole missed out with a minor knock picked up against Wycombe while Ricky Holmes and Lee Martin started the night on the bench, Jason Taylor and Lawson D’Ath their replacements.
On a cold night in Yorkshire Scott Flinders saved an early shot from Taylor as the Cobblers started the game on the front foot.
A good run from Marquis on 18 minutes lead to a chance but the York keeper went down well to smother the shot.
The breakthrough for the Cobblers came five minutes before half-time, James Collins heading in a perfectly delivered cross from Brendan Moloney.
John Marquis' close range finish doubled Town’s lead on 51 minutes, James Collins providing the assist.
York boss Jackie McNamara made a triple change in a bid to try and get his side back into the game, bringing on Vadaine Oliver, Russell Penn and Kenny McEvoy for the final half an hour. Sam Hoskins replaced Marquis in the Cobblers first change.
Michael Coulson drew a good save from Adam Smith and Bradley Fewster saw a header deflected behind as York pressed.
Ricky Holmes replaced Nicky Adams for the closing stages and but for a fine finger-tip save from Flinders Collins would have added a third goal.
Russell Penn pulled a goal back for York in the third minute of stoppage time but the goal wasn’t enough to stop the Cobblers recording their tenth successive league victory.
