Northampton Town winger Ricky Holmes has been named the Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Month for January.
His recent return from injury has been a welcome boost at Sixfields. Skilful, quick and always prepared to run at defenders, he provided two assists in the month as well as two goals, including a stunning volleyed winner at Dagenham & Redbridge.
Northampton manager Chris Wilder said: “This is a well deserved award for Ricky. He missed a large part of the first part of the season through injury but since getting back fit he has been in superb form.
“This is an award that repays the hours of hard work he put in to get himself fit and back playing when he was missing through injury.
“It has been a huge bonus for us to have Ricky back fit and available for selection and his challenge now is to maintain his excellent form in the coming weeks.”
Holmes said: “I am delighted to receive the award, individual recognition is great but it is a team effort here.
“We enjoyed an excellent month in January and recorded some really important results, both at home and away.
“We are pleased with where we are in the table, but we haven’t achieved anything yet and we still have a long way to go, all of us are very aware of that.”
Sky Sports’ Football League pundit Don Goodman said: “When coming back from injury, it’s always pleasing to make an impact in the team.
“Holmes has done that and more, and his creativity has been one of the major factors that has inspired his teammates to a 100% record in January and moved the team to the summit of League 2.”
