The Cobblers kicked off their Checkatrade Trophy group campaign with a home fixture vs Wycombe Wanderers.
David Cornell, Aaron Phillips, Lewin Nyatanga, Joel Byrom, Lawson D’Ath and JJ Hooper all came into the side while Adebayo Akinfenwa started on the bench for Wycombe. Gabriel Zakuani (international duty), John-Joe O’Toole (suspension) and Marc Richards (illness) were all unavailable for selection.
D’Ath headed just wide from a tantalising Hooper cross as the home side started brightly on a balmy evening at Sixfields.
It was Wycombe though who took the lead on 17 minutes, Danny Rowe bundling in from a corner.
Harry Beautyman worked Jamal Blackman from 25-yards before Alex Revell went close with a snap shot from a similar distance. The post denied Matthew Bloomfield while Stephen McGinn shot just wide with Cornell at full stretch. Blackman then saved a Nyatanga header at the second attempt as the first half drew to a close.
Paul Hayes doubled Wycombe’s lead at the start of the second half, chipping the ball over Cornell after capitalising on a loose pass.
D’Ath shot wide before Kenji Gorre and Raheem Hanley, making his professional debut, came on in a double change, replacing Beautyman and Hooper. Emmanuel Sonupe then came on for the last 16 minutes as D’Ath made way.
Dayle Southwell missed a good chance to increase the visitors lead as Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth, aged 43, brought himself on for the closing stages.
Referee Paul Tierney turned down the Cobblers appeals for a penalty when Sonupe went down in the area and Wycombe scored a third in stoppage time through Garry Thompson.
