Northampton Town, in their new third kit, travelled to Championship side Barnsley in the first round of the EFL Cup. Alfie Potter replaced Marc Richards in the only change to the side with Brendan Moloney, sidelined for most of pre-season through injury, named on the bench.

After a bright opening 20 minutes from the Cobblers it was the home side who took the lead, Josh Scowen heading in from an Adam Hammill free-kick.

Adam Smith comfortably saved a James Bree shot from distance while Gabriel Zakuani did well to head clear as Barnsley threatened a second. The Cobblers, having held their own for the majority, ended the first half on top but went in to the break a goal down.

A goal-line clearance from Zakuani prevented Barnsley from doubling their lead at the start of the second half while Harry Beautyman was nearly in for the Cobblers, only to be denied by some last ditch defending from the home side.

Rob Page’s side were back on level terms from the subsequent corner when Tykes goalkeeper Adam Davies punched the ball into his own net following a Zakuani header.

The goal lifted the Cobblers and it took a good save from Davies to keep out a shot from Kenji Gorre. Adam Smith saved from Marley Watkins and Alfie Mawson headed wide as Barnsley looked to wrestle back the initiative.

Neither Zander Diamond or John-Joe O’Toole could quite force the ball home in a scramble from a corner as the Cobblers continued to cause the home side more problems in defence.

Watkins headed over when presented with a good chance from a Conor Hourihane corner and Hammill blasted over deep in stoppage time as the 90 minutes ended 1-1, setting up 30 minutes of extra-time.

Stefan Payne went close to restoring Barnsley’s lead at the start of extra-time, only to be denied by the angle of post and bar with Adam Smith beaten.

Another chance for Watkins came and went while the same player was thwarted by a Smith save as the home side pressed.

The Cobblers won it with a goal in the 114th minute, John-Joe O’Toole rising majestically to head home a Matt Taylor corner.
