Northampton Town have been promoted to Sky Bet League 1.The Cobblers promotion was confirmed on Saturday after a 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers left them with an unassailable 16 point lead over fourth placed Rovers.
Chris Wilder’s side have been in an automatic promotion spot since mid-November, and have led League 2 since mid January. They will clinch the League 2 title if they better Oxford United's result next week.
A number of club records have fallen by the wayside during this remarkable season, and more could yet follow in the remaining weeks.
2016/17 will be the first time Northampton Town have played in the third tier of English football since 2009.
