Northampton Town’s run of 9 games in 28 days came to an end against Dagenham & Redbridge at Sixfields. Adam Yates (thigh) joined Zander Diamond, Ricky Holmes, Brendan Moloney and Evan Horwood on the Cobblers injury-list, meaning a recall to the starting line-up for Josh Lelan.

Dagenham included former Sixfields left-back Joe Widdowson in their side along with former Cobblers loanee midfielder Kane Ferdinand. Veteran striker Jamie Cureton started the afternoon on the Daggers bench.

Liam O’Brien saved from Alfie Potter and Lawson D’Ath headed over from a Nicky Adams cross in the opening 15 minutes while Ryan Watson picked up an early yellow card for a foul on Kane Ferdinand.

The opening goal came on 23 minutes, Marc Richards heading home from six-yards, Nicky Adams providing the assist with a perfectly delivered ball into the box.

The lead was to last just five minutes however, Ashley Hemmings crossing for Matt McClure to equalise following a loss of possession by the Cobblers in midfield. Chris Wilder was then forced into making a change with Chris Hackett replacing Alfie Potter.

Dagenham took the lead on 39 minutes, Matt McClure capitalising on a defensive mix-up to put the away side in front. McClure then had a chance to complete his hat-trick just before half-time and would have done but for a terrific save from Adam Smith.

Christian Doidge drew a good save from Smith at the start of the second half before Cobblers substitute Sam Hoskins, on for Lawson D’Ath, came close to making it 2-2 when his shot from distance was tipped on to the crossbar by O’Brien.

In a spell of pressure for the home side, Ryan Cresswell’s goalbound header was cleared off the line by Ayo Obileye as Dominic Calvert-Lewin came on for Josh Lelan in the Cobblers final change.

With the game stretched Zavon Hines played in Ashley Hemmings on 82 minutes but Adam Smith was there again, making a diving save to keep the Cobblers in it. Town couldn’t conjure up an equaliser in the remaining minutes though as their 10-match unbeaten run against the Daggers came to an end.
