Ryan Watson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin came into the Northampton Town side for the trip to Morecambe. Jason Taylor served the first game of a four-match ban while a slight side strain meant Marc Richards started the game on the bench as a precautionary measure.

Adam Smith was the first goalkeeper to be tested on a sunny afternoon at the Globe Arena, Smith making a good save to deny veteran Kevin Ellison.

Barry Roche saved from Calvert-Lewin as the Cobblers began to assert themselves on the game while a goal line clearance prevented Lawson D’Ath from opening the scoring, albeit temporarily.

Town had been knocking on the door and the deadlock was broken on the half hour mark, Lawson D’Ath with a close range finish following Nicky Adams cross.

And less than 3 minutes later it was 2-0, Sam Hoskins side-footing the ball home from 10-yards after being played in by David Buchanan.

Ryan Cresswell cleared Ellison’s goal bound header as Morecambe looked to respond but it was to be 2-0 at the break.

The Cobblers increased their lead at the start of the second half, Joel Byrom’s inch-perfect free-kick eluding everyone to nestle in the corner of the net.

But for some fine saves from Roche it would have been 4-0 on 51 minutes, Adams, Calvert-Lewin and Hoskins all denied. Hoskins then had an effort cleared off the line as Chris Wilder’s side looked to really press home the advantage.

Morecambe pulled a goal back on 66 minutes, Tom Barkhuizen heading in from a corner.

Town’s three goal lead was quickly restored however, Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a neat back heel having been set up by substitute Alfie Potter.

It was 2-4 on 86 minutes, a low cross from Aaron Wildig going in last off Joel Byrom. There were no more goals after that as the Cobblers made it back-to-back wins whilst ending Morecambe’s four-match winning run.
