Chris Wilder made two changes to the side for part two of the Cobblers London (ish) week long away day trilogy, Ryan Cresswell and Sam Hoskins coming in for Zander Diamond and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Gozie Ugwu, who spent pre-season on trial at Sixfields before picking up an injury and then signing for Wycombe, started for Wanderers.

The home side took the lead inside two minutes at Adams Park, Luke O’Nien with a looping header over Adam Smith.

The Cobblers responded well to falling behind, Matt Ingram saving from Marc Richards with Nicky Adams ready to pounce and Joel Byrom seeing a shot deflected behind.

Smith denied Ugwu at close range as Wycombe had a chance to double their lead while David Buchanan made a terrific tackle to nip the ball away from Garry Thompson. Thompson was then through one-on-one with Smith on 26 minutes but the Town goalkeeper made the save.

Aaron Pierre came to Wycombe’s rescue just after the half hour mark, making a goal line clearance to prevent Ryan Cresswell’s header making it 1-1.

It was only a temporary measure for Wanderers though with the Cobblers deservedly back on terms on 35 minutes, Marc Richards scoring from a free-kick tapped off to him by Adams.

The second half, like the first, started with an early goal but this time it went the way of the Cobblers, Lawson D’Ath heading in Nicky Adams cross.

Less than five minutes later Shaun Brisley doubled the Cobblers lead, the on-loan defender heading in from a free-kick.

Wycombe made a double change just after the hour mark in an attempt to get themselves back into the game, Matt Bloomfield and Sam Wood coming on.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ryan Watson came on for the Cobblers before Wycombe pulled a goal back on 82 minutes, Danny Rowe scoring from close range following a corner.

That goal set up a tense finale but the Cobblers, backed by a terrific following of fans in fine voice, came through to claim three points against the side who started the afternoon top of League 2.
