Dominic Calvert-Lewin replaced the suspended Lawson D’Ath for the visit of Carlisle United, who included in their starting line-up former Cobblers striker Derek Asamoah.

Joel Byrom and John-Joe O’Toole both had shots blocked in the opening few minutes while a fierce drive from O’Toole had to be turned behind by Mark Gillespie as the Cobblers started the night on the front foot.

Calvert-Lewin tested Gillespie on 16 minutes before Asamoah slid a shot across the Cobblers six-yard box. With Zander Diamond on for the injured Cresswell, Asamoah then had a chance to open the scoring on 25 minutes but put his shot wide.

Carlisle took the lead just before the half hour mark, Newcastle loanee Alex Gilliead poking the ball home having been played in by Bastien Hery.

Adam Smith made a smart save to deny Asamoah one-on-one and the ex-Sixfields striker went close to making it 2-0 in first half stoppage time when his shot struck the post.

After Asamoah’s near miss there was still time for a Cobblers corner and Town went in at half-time back on level terms, an unchallenged Dominic Calvert-Lewin heading home.

Having equalised in first half stoppage time the Cobblers took the lead 75 seconds into the second half, Sam Hoskins' deflected effort beating Gillespie in the Carlisle goal.

Calvert-Lewin doubled the Cobblers lead on 63 minutes, the Sheffield United loanee, again unmarked, volleying in Nicky Adams corner.

Alfie Potter came on for Sam Hoskins for the final 17 minutes, Potter back in action after missing the previous few weeks with a dead leg.

Smith made a good save to keep out a shot from Cumbrians substitute Joe Thompson, Diamond on hand to clear the rebound.

Jason Taylor came on for the final few minutes in place of double goalscorer Calvert-Lewin.

Charlie Wyke pulled a goal back for Carlisle in stoppage time to create a nervous ending but the Cobblers closed the game out to claim the three points.
